Warning signs were posted at Hookipa Beach Park after a large shark was seen biting a turtle about 150 yards from shore in the area of Hamakuapoko Point on Wednesday afternoon, the Maui Fire Department reported.
The 10- to 12-foot shark was spotted at 2:15 p.m. It was within 10 feet of surfers in the area but showed no aggression toward them, according to Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro.
He said ocean safety officers alerted people to stay out of the water.
