MUMBAI: A 52-year-old diabetic underwent what doctors claimed first of its kind surgery in India after which he reported marked improvement in his condition.

Vrajendra Singh, a resident of Mathura, UP, underwent the "neuro-endocrine brake surgery" at Bombay Hospital on October 4 as his blood sugar level was shooting very high.

The third part of the small intestine was cut and transpositioned for the first part, thereby stimulating a biochemical process that controls diabetes, the doctors said.

Singh, who delivers LPG cylinders, used to spend around Rs 24,000 a year for his treatment on diabetes. He usedto take five tablets a day but now takes only one tablet, Dr Ramen Goel, who performed the surgery, said on Wednesday evening.

"We will review this dosage as well this week," Goel, who is also a teacher with the JJ Group of hospitals, said.

Talking about the advantage of this surgery, Goel said an insulin type, GLP-1, is secreted in response to food stimulus and this helps in increase of insulin secretion.

Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism in which a lack of the hormone insulin results in a failure to absorb sugar and starch properly.

Bombay Hospital is among a few medical centres in Asia which have started conducting this surgery, Goel said.

The total cost for this treatment ranges between Rs two lakh to Rs three lakh, the doctor added.

Singh is the first patient in India to undergo this surgery and Goel is the third surgeon to perform it in the world, the doctors claimed.
